weekly thought: When i read the novel this week, i found out something very unique. It involved the relationship between clothes and identity. When Oliver wore a formal suit as a disguise, a person ask him what he would do when he grow up. To his surprise, no one ask him that question before when they saw him as a poor orphan boy. This shows how clothes linked to a person identity. This is part of class distinctions. In Vietnam, I noticed a lot of people don't have nice clothes, and from my other 2 blogs, you know it is a poor country. One day as I went around the city, I couldn't but noticed a lot of people were looking at me and I was also looking at them because their dirty old clothes caught my eye. It was kind of scary the way they look at me. I thought they assume I was a ghost or something. Well as i kept on going around the city, a lot of lottery ticket sellers bugged me to buy tickets. I think about 30 sellers came up to me, and i was very fustrated. I don't understand why they are coming to me. Then it hit me, I remembered that my parents told me that the sellers would only try to sell to rich individual. However, how could they see me as a rich person? Well i soon found out that i was wearing some nice clothes (not really it was mostly like a nice shirt and jeans that i got a year ago) and this was somehow an indication I was rich. And soon I found out the reason why a lot of people were looking at me. It's weird but thats how it works in Vietnam. People can figure out what class (first, middle, and poor) you belong in by just looking at what you are wearing.
